What does the e1/E1 marking mean, and why is it important?
The e1/E1 marking confirms that a vehicle or vehicle component complies with the legal requirements of EU or UNECE regulations. It is a prerequisite for being allowed to sell or install products in the European and many international markets. The marking indicates that an independent technical authority— in Germany, the KBA (Federal Motor Transport Authority)—has tested and approved the product. For manufacturers, this means legal certainty, market access, and a transparent approval that OEMs and authorities worldwide can rely on.
What role does Testlab play in the type‑approval process?
Testlab supports manufacturers throughout the entire homologation process—from identifying the relevant regulations and planning and carrying out all tests to complete documentation and communication with the approval authority. As a result, customers benefit from a seamless process and accredited laboratories that centrally cover all requirements.
For which EU and UNECE regulations is Testlab designated?
Testlab is designated for numerous EU and UNECE regulations. These include, among others, UNECE R10 (EMC), UNECE R100 (REESS), UNECE R165 (reversing warning sounds), UNECE R97 (electronic immobilisers), as well as several EU regulations such as Regulation (EU) 2016/1788 or Directive 2009/19/EC (to be reviewed). This enables both electrical/electronic sub‑assemblies and complete vehicles to be tested and evaluated in accordance with recognised international requirements.
