FAQs – Market Access

Which standards and regulations are relevant for market access?

The relevant standards and regulations depend on the product type and the target market. In Europe, CE marking and EU directives such as RED, EMC, and RoHS are key. In the USA, FCC and UL standards apply, while in Asia, national standards such as CCC (China) or PSE (Japan) prevail.

Manufacturers must identify applicable requirements, conduct technical tests, and prepare conformity assessments. Early analysis of the regulatory framework helps avoid delays and rework

What challenges exist in accessing international markets?

International markets have different requirements for products, documentation, and testing procedures. Language barriers, cultural differences, and complex approval processes can make market access difficult.

Typical challenges include:

  • Different technical standards

  • Local certification bodies and authorities

  • Translation requirements for documents

  • Time-consuming testing procedures

A structured market access strategy, supported by experienced partners and local contacts, helps to overcome these hurdles efficiently.

What services do we offer in the area of market access?

We support manufacturers in all steps of the market access process – from analyzing regulatory requirements to technical testing and communication with authorities and certification bodies.

Our services include:

  • Advice on standards and guidelines

  • Coordination of examinations and approvals

  • Creation of technical documentation

  • Support with international certifications

The goal is to place products in the desired markets in a legally compliant, efficient manner and without delays.

What is a radio operator's certificate and when is it required?

Radio certification is required if a product uses radio technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular networks, or other wireless transmission methods. Each country has its own regulatory requirements that must be met before a product can be placed on the market. In Europe, the RED Directive applies; in the USA, the FCC regulations; and in Japan, the MIC certification.

The certification process includes technical tests to ensure compliance with limits for transmission power, frequency usage, and electromagnetic compatibility. Manufacturers must provide proof of conformity and, in some cases, apply for national certificates. Without valid radio certification, a product may not be sold or operated in many markets.

What does a technical service of the KBA do and when is it needed?

A Technical Service of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is an accredited testing body that conducts technical assessments of vehicle components. These assessments are a prerequisite for type approval, which products such as control units, sensors, or lighting systems require to be used on public roads.

The Technical Service verifies compliance with legal requirements (e.g., German Road Traffic Act [StVZO], EU regulations) and prepares test reports, which are submitted to the KBA (Federal Motor Transport Authority) for approval. Manufacturers benefit from a structured and legally compliant approval process for their products on the European market.

What approvals do ship equipment require and who issues them?

Marine equipment is subject to international safety standards and must be approved by classification societies such as DNV, GL, ABS, or LR. These organizations test products based on standards such as SOLAS, IMO regulations, or IEC standards.

The certification process includes technical tests, documentation reviews, and, in some cases, factory audits. Products such as navigation systems, radio equipment, or safety-related components must meet these requirements to be used on ships. Certification is often a prerequisite for accessing international maritime markets.
